Cardiovascular Risk and -Linolenic Acid Can Costa Rica Clarify?

چکیده

Interest is increasing in the potential cardioprotective role of -3 (n-3) fatty acids (FAs). Most of the evidence supporting this hypothesis has been derived from studies of the longer-chain members of the n-3 family, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), found in fish oils.1 The value of the shorter-chain cousin, -linolenic acid (ALA), found in certain plant oils (flaxseed, soybean, canola, walnut) has been less clear.2 If ALA were able to do the same “heavy lifting” that EPA and DHA do, this would be welcomed news because the capacity to produce ALA is essentially limitless, whereas there are only so many fish in the sea. Campos and colleagues report in this issue of Circulation the results of a major study conducted in Costa Rica that provided new evidence that higher ALA intakes are associated with reduced risk for nonfatal myocardial infarction.3

Fatty Acid Desaturase Gene Variants, Cardiovascular Risk Factors, and Myocardial Infarction in the Costa Rica Study

Genetic variation in fatty acid desaturases (FADS) has previously been linked to long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) in adipose tissue and cardiovascular risk. The goal of our study was to test associations between six common FADS polymorphisms (rs174556, rs3834458, rs174570, rs2524299, rs174589, rs174627), intermediate cardiovascular risk factors, and non-fatal myocardial infarction...

Adipose Tissue -Linolenic Acid and Nonfatal Acute Myocardial Infarction in Costa Rica

Background— -Linolenic acid may protect against cardiovascular disease. We examined the association between adipose tissue -linolenic acid and nonfatal acute myocardial infarction (MI) in a population-based case-control study in Costa Rica. Methods and Results—The 482 case patients with a first nonfatal acute MI and 482 population control subjects were matched by age, sex, and area of residence...

Differences in the association of cardiovascular risk factors with education: a comparison of Costa Rica (CRELES) and the USA (NHANES)

BACKGROUND Despite different levels of economic development, Costa Rica and the USA have similar mortalities among adults. However, in the USA there are substantial differences in mortality by educational attainment, and in Costa Rica there are only minor differences. This contrast motivates an examination of behavioural and biological correlates underlying this difference. METHODS The author...

“It’s Practically a Must”: Neoliberal Reasons for Foreign Language Learning

This qualitative study analyzes the reasons of college students for learning English as a foreign language (EFL) in Costa Rica and the reasons of high school students for learning German as a foreign language (GFL) in the US. It asks to what extent the learners’ reasons align with or deviate from neoliberal discourses that commodify foreign languages. The analysis of 27 interviews in a US high ...
